One of the biggest stories of the last few days has been Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s public criticism of full-back Luke Shaw, saying he was “a long way behind” his United team-mates in terms of focus and ambition.

Stuart Pearce is the guest on Premier League Daily this morning, and the former England international has had his say on his fellow left-back, talking up a fascinating potential transfer should Shaw have to leave Old Trafford!

“He’s had a real stop-start career at United. He’s shown flashes of being every part a United left-back, but other times he’s had injuries, not played well, questions marks about his professionalism which I find strange on a young player. But I think with the manager he’s got, he’s got a wonderful manager to teach him the game.

“He’s going to have to convince Jose [Mourinho] that he is the right man for the job, I don’t think it’s as easy as, ‘well if you don’t fancy me I’m off’, sometimes as players you have to roll your sleeves up and say, ‘I’ll prove you wrong’. I think he has to do that.

“There’s been talk of Tottenham, as Pochettino worked with him, but I think the biggest talent in the left-back berth at this moment in time is Danny Rose. I think he’s turned into one of the best left-backs in the world personally. So there could maybe be some money and a swap deal?”
